  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Cable Railing Assemblies: Prefabricated Kits & Custom Design Options

It’s time to stop thinking of only vertical pickets, horizontal rails, or glass panels when it comes to railing infill. Today’s cable railing infill options are durable, versatile, attractive, low maintenance, easy to use, and virtually invisible. This course provides an overview of the advantages of stainless steel cable railing assemblies including frame design options and essential cable assembly components. It continues with a review of code requirements and concludes with a discussion of installation processes for custom cable assemblies.

Explain the code requirements that pertain to stainless steel cable railing assemblies to ensure safety, paying particular attention to the 4-inch sphere rule and the restrictions on horizontal infill.

Identify important frame design options for both wood and metal railing frames that ensure frames are structurally sound and will support the tension of properly installed cables.

Classify essential cable assembly components such as fixed ends and tension adjustment fittings, as well as options for custom cable assemblies.

Describe the installation process for prefabricated cable kits and custom cable assemblies, and discuss how to determine the best choice of cable for a railing project.
