Course Description: AEC Daily: Mechanical Parking: A Catalyst for Innovation in Building Design
As the population grows, urban centers are becoming denser and land more valuable. Architects are looking for parking solutions that provide space-saving benefits to high-density residential and commercial developments. This course discusses the performance of mechanical parking systems, also known as automated parking or high-density parking (HDP), and how they reduce space required for vehicle storage, increase safety, and minimize the environmental impact of parking vehicles. Specifications and installation are also examined.
Explain how mechanical parking can improve the financial performance of the building project and increase building design opportunities, such as green space.
Summarize the implementation and basic operation of semi-automated and automated parking systems.
Describe how mechanical parking systems lessen the environmental impact of parking vehicles by reducing water pollution and decreasing energy requirements needed for HVAC air quality control.
Identify how mechanical parking systems improve parking facility security by reducing opportunities for theft and vandalism.
Discuss how mechanical parking systems can help reduce pedestrian and vehicle accidents, improving safety.
