Course Description: AEC Daily: The Fireplace in Contemporary Design
Fireplaces remain one of the main focal points of a home. No longer used only for heating or cooking, and coupled with advances in technology and fuel options, fireplaces have evolved into an architectural component of the designed living space. Modern gas fireplaces offer an environmentally friendly heating solution with high efficiency ratings and contemporary designs that don’t sacrifice form for function. This course offers an overview of contemporary fireplace styles, options, venting, and installation, with a focus on cool wall technology and how it allows electronics and other design elements to be safely mounted over a fireplace.
List the benefits of gas fireplaces over wood-burning fireplaces, such as ease of use, elimination of the dangers of chimney buildup, design flexibility, and significantly reduced emissions of particulates into the environment.
Define direct venting systems, including how they work and why they are the safest, most efficient and convenient venting system available today .
Explain the need for and benefit of cool wall technology and discuss construction techniques for a cool wall as well as the general installation techniques for safely mounting electronics and shelving over a fireplace.
Summarize the general construction techniques for framing, wall support, heat release, and access panels for gas fireplaces.
Describe the precautions necessary for fireplace safety found in the 2015 ANSI heat barrier code, including two heat barrier options for all glass-fronted fireplace models to prevent contact with the inner fireplace glass.
