  • Course Description: AEC Daily: Protected Membrane Roof (PMR): Innovative Solution for Sustainable Commercial Buildings

Protected membrane roof (PMR) assemblies have been widely adopted in low-slope commercial buildings since the late 1960s. Also known as inverted or upside-down roofs, PMR assemblies move the waterproofing membrane from the top of the roof assembly to the surface of the structural deck. This course explores how PMR assemblies provide several advantages over conventional roof assemblies, offering superior protection against water penetration and enhanced energy efficiency. The course also shows how PMR assemblies allow for the creation of green roofs or blue roof systems. With a proven record of reliability, PMR assemblies present a compelling solution for architects seeking innovative, sustainable, and efficient roofing options.

Describe the unique differences between PMR and conventional roofing assemblies, including their advantages and disadvantages, and the key factors to consider when selecting insulation materials and assembly components.

Discuss how PMR assemblies perform in high wind loads and how to choose the right ballasting option based on the building’s location and design.

Explore the features and benefits of different types of vegetative (green roof) PMRs and how they can contribute to energy efficiency, water retention and treatment, and air quality in commercial buildings.

Examine the sustainability advantages of PMR assemblies over conventional roofing systems, including their ability to reduce overall energy consumption, carbon footprint, and impact on the local environment, and how to leverage these advantages during the design and building use phases.
